circa 1838 Masons Ironstone plate, Ruddock’s Orleans Hotel, Chartres St, New Orleans / 1838, “Mason’s Patent Ironstone China”- brown crown/ribbon mark,
two-tone brown “Chinese Vista” pattern with orange, rose and green highlights, similar to Blue Willow motif, floral cluster motif border, rippled flat rim.
10 3/8” dia, 1.25” high.
Condition – excellent, no chips, cracks or repairs, nominal-no knife marks/wear. 75ab
- Masons Patent Ironstone China, York, England (1813-1891). Without “England” - mark #10 (1825-).
- Timothy Tredwell Kissam & Co, 141 Maiden, New York (1820s-late 1840s) The factory burned in great fire of 1835. The company was an American retailer of Masons Ironstone China and a prominent importer for American hotels, including the sole provider for Astor House Hotel, NYC.
- TT Kissam is recorded as a crockery and glass merchant in NYC. Timothy Tredwell Kissam (b1800-d1878) appears to have moved to Berlin, Wisconsin early 1850s after death of first wife Sarah Betts (1848). There is record of cattle raised and named by him in mid 1850s thru 1860s in Wisconsin.
- Mr Ruddock ran a hotel (probably Orleans) and appears on New Orleans census reports of 1845-50 from which period this mark was used. Earlier, Ruddock, LA, a lumber town located west of New Orleans / Lake Ponchatrain was destroyed in a 1915 hurricane and never rebuilt. A historical marker locates the site.
- Known items with both TT Kessam retailer and Ruddocks Hotel mark – an early Masons pattern - Known items with Ruddock mark - “Nankin” shape covered tureen, a toast water jug, and a few plates and a bowl that I am also offering for sale.
