Circa 1900 Neoclassical / Adams Revival console table, scagliola inlaid on carved marble, solid walnut, demi-lune form,
Marble top – carved egg and dart edge, carved and scagliola inlaid with Classical urn with garlands on front border, centered with a classical medallion,
Table - Adams style flute carved skirt, caved paterae skirt medallion and on top of each square tapered legs, carved bellflower panels on front and sides of legs, moulded spade feet.
46” wide, 32” tall, 24” deep.
Condition – excellent, normal usage / age marks, some loss of inlaid surface.
- Scagliola – a method of inlay on marble that uses a pigmented paste to fill the carved marble surface as in this example. It was popularized in the late 18th century by Pietro Bossi as an alternative to more expensive inlaid marble. The processes were inspired by early Roman examples and examples seen at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
