Antique three-piece mantle candelabra GIRANDOLE set,
- c1850 Rococo Victorian,
- “Spirit of 76” motif,
- likely Philadelphia or New York City manufacture,
- great original two-tone gold gilt surface, solid brass,
- double step white marble bases with molded castings,
- facet cut prisms,
- Revolutionary uniformed soldier with peg leg, a tricorner hat and holding musket
- with a youth alongside holding stick (imitation rifle)
- standing under an old scarred oak tree,
- scroll leafy arms,
- well-cast candle cups,
- downturned leaf bobeche holding prisms.

Centerpiece - 18.5” tall, 15” wide.
Sidepieces - 16” tall.
Marble bases - 6.5” wide, 3.5” deep.
Condition – excellent, solid, great original two-tone gilt surface, nominal usage wear, nominal nicks on prisms and marble, a few mis-matched prisms but correct style.           2348

- Three piece girandole set used on many mid 19th century mantles and tables (1845-1880s). they were produced in various themes popular at the time, such as this model when the USA was approching the Centennial celebrations of the countries founding and the battle for freedoms.
- Girandole sets as this could be purchased with increasing cost... finished brass, a two-tone gilt finish and what is called today a bright lemon-gold.  The gold-gilt surface models, like the one offered here, did not tarnish as brass does. And the two-step marble bases were an upgrade as were the facet-cut prisms.
- This set likely produced in Philadelphia, but similar features produced by New York City firms. Similar features of candle cups, downturn leaf prism rings and scroll arms were produced by Cornelius & Co, Phila, also by Dietz, Bros & Co, NYC and others. This possible "Spirit of 76" motif could also be the model mentioned in the Starr, Fellows and Company 1856 catalog.
