- Toast water jug - toast water recipe - pouring three pints boiling water over 8 oz bread toasted on open flame, allowing it to stand and then straining liquid to introduce a more nutritious drink. I understand it is settling on the stomach and to be a pleasing caramel / toffee with toasted flavor. Altho I’m sure flavor would change with types of bread used and would not be as nutritious using modern bleached and processed breads.
- 1851 publications - “In making toast-and-water, never blacken the bread, but toast it only a nice brown. Never leave toast-and-water to make until the moment it is required, as it cannot be properly prepared”
